    Making A Difference

Service is an integral part of Guiding values. All of our Units can or are making a difference in their neighborhoods, schools, homes, and even worldwide. You can make a difference in many ways both large and small. Tell us how your unit has or is "Making a Difference" so we can post it on this page to become an inspiration to others.

Service may seem like an old fashioned word. Usually phrases like "do a good turn", "lend a hand" or "help others" are used instead of the word service but the meaning is still the same.

While Guiding members cannot fundraise for other charitable organizations on behalf of Girl Guides of Canada, we can certainly help those organizations in other ways. Saskatoon Area promotes the idea of service at all levels of Guiding.  It can be as simple as cleaning up the litter in the school yard or as involved as learning to knit blankets for a homeless shelter.

In the book “Girl Guiding/ Girl Scouting: A Challenging Movement”,  which is produced by World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), lists the Good Turn as a symbol of unity.  It states;

The Good Turn symbolizes the service given by all

members of the movement to the community.

Younger girls think of ways they can do a Good

Turn every day, whilst older girls develop this

further into service projects at local, national

and international levels (page 28).
