Message to all adult Members of Girl Guides of Canada
Dear Guiders,
Earlier this month, I was proud to inform all adult Members about the new Promise for Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada. At our 100th anniversary launch party in Toronto on January 16, more than 4,000 Members joined together in saying the Promise for the first time. It was an exciting way for us to embark on a new century of Guiding.
Below are some answers to questions you might have about the Promise. I hope you find these helpful as you work with girls in learning the new Promise.
Chris Burton,
Chief Commissioner
Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada
What is the new Promise?
The Promise for girls Brownie age and older and adult Members:
I
promise to do my best,
To be true to myself, my beliefs and Canada.
I will take action for a better world
And respect the Guiding Law.
(Brownies say: And respect the Brownie Law)
En français:
Je promets de faire de mon mieux,
d’être fidèle à moi-même, à mes croyances et au Canada,
d’agir pour un monde meilleur
et de respecter la Loi guide. (Brownies dit: et d'accepter la Loi des Brownies)
*
Please note that the Spark Promise remains the same:
I promise to share and be a friend.
En français:
Je promets de partager et d’être une amie.
Has the sign changed?
All Members Brownie age and older should now use the three-finger sign which represents the three parts of the Promise. Sparks should continue to use the two-finger Spark sign which represents the two parts of the Spark Promise.
When should GGC Members start using the Promise and Sign?
The Promise and Sign are now in effect and girls and adult Members should begin to use them in all of their Guiding meetings, activities and events.
How do Brownies refer to the Promise and the sign?
As the Promise and Sign are now for all Members Brownie age and older, it is called the Promise. Here’s how the symbols of Guiding will now be referenced:

How do I help my girls learn about the new Promise?
Girl-friendly resources are now on Member Zone – click here or go to https://memberzone.girlguides.ca/C11/Promise/default.aspx. These include activity sheets for girls and resources for Guiders.
The new Promise means our program books are out of date. What do we do?
We will be distributing by mail stickers with the new Promise to Contact Guiders in February. Members can place these stickers in their program books. There will also be additional stickers for girls who join your Unit later in the year.
What about trainings and other materials that have the old Promise?
TEAM trainings, Orientation to Guiding and other materials are being updated and will be available online by mid-February.
Look for further updates in upcoming issues of Guider e-News.
